The Mars Petcare Company announced it will increase the production of its pet treats at the Columbia, South Carolina location, with a $128 million dollar increase over the next five years, according to The State newspaper of South Carolina.
By boosting their treat production, 277 more jobs will be created and this will triple the plant’s payroll on the south edge of Columbia. Some of the planning calls for adding 290,000 square feet to the plant, which is one of the 15 operated by Mars Petcare.
Company spokeswoman Julie Lawless told the newspaper, “This is helping us meet growing demand.”
The expansion of the company is thanks in part to $1.5 million in aid from state commerce official for site development and property tax breaks from Richland County. Last week, the county council announced the plan after it gave final approval to the incentives.
The expansion comes with the partnership formed between state and local officials and the company, according to Mars Petcare North America president, Luc Mongeau.
Mars is considered one of the world’s largest pet food manufacturers and veterinary care companies, and they began producing pet food in 1935. Some of their top-selling brands include Whiskas, Pedigree, Cesar, Nutro, Royal Canin, and Banfield.
