Latin American Veterinary Training Center Opens in Nicaragua
World Vets, a non-government organization that provides veterinary care around the world in conjunction with animal advocacy groups recently opened its first year-round International Training Center.
Located in Granada, Nicaragua, the center will train over 500 Latin American veterinarians in the year 2012. The center will also see 160 United States vet students in the summer of 2012 as part of its International Veterinary Medicine program.
World Vets is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with work spanning 34 countries and six continents. The group addresses veterinary issues but also tackles human health issues impacted by zoonotic diseases in developing countries.
Dr. Cathy King, Founder and CEO of World Vets, shared, “
“Our primary goal is to help Latin American veterinarians gain surgical experience in an environment of high quality, one on one instruction. Equally important is providing excellent patient care for the thousands of community animals that will benefit from the services provided.”
The clinic will have the latest in technology so that high quality care can be provided free or charge for spay and neuter surgeries for the thousands of street dogs in the Nicaraguan area. Donations were made by Heska, VSSI, and Dentalaire in support of the efforts. Kyle Baird, VP of International Operations, stated, “The Latin American Training Center is a huge step for World Vets. The entire project is generously supported by the Foundation Brigitte Bardot.
Of their continual efforts, World Vets works in two Nicaraguan cities, two annual United States Navy humanitarian aid missions, in Haiti, Timor Leste, Honduras, Tanzania, Ecuador, Romania, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, and other countries.
