"Smudge" Wins Year of Organic Dog Treats from The Barkers Dozen
The Barkers Dozen, founded in 2009 by Shawn Sherry and Anthony Newman, conducted a recent drawing of over 1,700 entries to celebrate the pet treat company’s second year in business.
Lanisa Larrabee’s 7-year-old Chihuahua mix Smudge was named grand prize winner of a year’s supply of free organic dog treats from The Barkers Dozen. The prize equates to a box of The Barkers Dozen organic treats every month for 12 months. Considered a world traveler that likes to camp and fish, he is a curious dog who, according to his owner, “wants to check everything out.”
The Barker’s Dozen products are available at select pet boutiques, upscale retailers, and grocery stores as well as online through the company’s store. Presently the line includes : Barkers Family Chicken Treats, Barkers Carrot Treats, Blueberry Bone-anza Gluten Free Treats, Barkers Dozen Barkscotti, Peanut Butter Cups, Peanut Butter Treats, and The Big Dipper.
The treats are organic and are made from human-grade organic ingredients in a variety of shapes and sizes. In the midst of the 2008 pet food scare, the owners decided to start a local and organic dog treat business where customers could feel safe and secure about the treats they feed their pets.
After their first year in business in 2010, The Barkers Dozen redesigned its website complete with an interactive virtual storefront and a blog and e-newsletter. In 2011, Sherry assumed sole ownership of the business and began utilizing staff from Aditus Group, which is a non-profit group helping people with special needs to enter the work force.
