The Portland Development Corporation (PDC) recently named Planet Dog as the 2011 Small Business of the Year. Based in Portland, Maine, the award recognizes Planet Dog’s role in developing Portland’s economic vitality.
Since incorporating in 1997, Planet Dog’s mission has been to create products for dogs and provide financial resources to those in need, educate consumers about canine-related issues, and create an array of non-toxic and recyclable products. Their flagship initiative is dubbed the Planet Dog Foundation and since 2006 it has donated over $500,000 in cash and product donations.
Some of the other works Planet Dog is involved in include helping preserve local romp lands and create new green space, with a donation of over $100,000 to supporting the Bayside Project. The funds were also used to plant 101 dogwood trees along the Bayside Trail.
Stephanie Volo, president of Planet Dog’s Top Dog shared her reaction to the news, “We are extremely proud that our commitment to leading a values-based business and our community is being recognized by the City of Portland. As a small company doing big things, our goal has been and will always be to improve the world around us by giving back to our community, our workforce and the environment.”
The Portland Development Corporation is staffed by the Economic Development Division and provides financial assistance to both business and industry throughout Portland, Maine. They also work to insure city compliance to goals, objectives, and requirements. The corporation was formed by the city in 1991 and has provided more than 100 Portland businesses with over $5.5 million in financial assistance.
