P&G Voluntarily Recalls One Production Lot of Dry Dog Food
The Proctor & Gamble Company voluntarily retrieved a single production lot of dry dog food from store shelves this week. The reason for the retrieval was due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit. Aflatoxins are a group of chemicals produced by certain mold fungi. Representatives from Proctor & Gamble report aflatoxin is a naturally occurring by-product of Aspergillus flavus that can be harmful to pets if consumed in large quantities.
With the retrieval of product, the company reports all product affected has been removed from store shelves, no illnesses have been reported in association with this production lot as of this writing, and no other Iams pet food products are affected.
The product lot retrieved is Iams ProActive Health Smart puppy dry dog food with use or expiration dates of February 5 or February 6, 2013. Versions affected include 7-pound bags with code date 12784177I6, UPC code 1901402305; 8-pound bags with code date 12794177D2 and 12794177D3, UPC code 1901410208; and 17.5-pound bags with code date 12794177K1 and 12794177K2, UPC code 1901401848.
The product lot affected was distributed to a limited number of United States retailers and include Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Retailers have removed the product from store shelves, with no other Iams dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned food, biscuits, treats, or supplements affected.
Proctor & Gamble retrieved the product as a precautionary measure according to reports. Consumers who have purchased the product are to stop using it and contact Proctor & Gamble for a product replacement or refund by calling 866-908-1569 Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm EST. Consumers may also visit www.iams.com.
