The Best Friends Animal Society board of directors has elected S. Louise Phanstiel as their new chair. Phanstiel will replace John Fripp, who is retiring and also served as chief financial officer of the society.
Phanstiel is a resident of Los Angeles, California, and has been on the board of directors for three years.
Retired from Wellpoint, Inc., she held several positions there including President of Specialty Products. She also was a partner at the now PricewaterhouseCoopers and has served on several non-profit boards including the American Heart Association and the I Have a Dream Foundation.
The board also appointed Anne Mejia to fulfill the role of board secretary, replacing the retiring Celeste Fripp, and Deborah Morrison to replace John Fripp as chief financial officer earlier this year.
“We are lucky to have such an experienced and qualified person as Louise Phanstiel to lead our board,” said Gregory Castle, chief executive officer of Best Friends Animal Society.
Located in Angel Canyon of southern Utah, the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (BFAS) is home to approximately 2,000 dogs, cats, and other animals who arrived from shelters and rescue groups across the country for special care. When Best Friends Animal Society first began its journey in the late 1980s, approximately 17 million dogs and cats were being euthanized in shelters every year. Since that time and the inception of BFAS, the number of dogs and cats destroyed in shelters has fallen to five million per year.
Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit organization that builds no-kill programs and partnerships to work towards its No More Homeless Pets program. With headquarters in Kanab, Utah, it is the country’s largest no-kill sanctuary.
