NBC to Host Annual Thanksgiving Day National Dog Show
Keeping with Thanksgiving Day tradition, The National Dog Show presented by Purina will air on NBC on November 24, 2011, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. in all time zones.
For the past 10 years, David Frei and John O’Hurley have hosted the traditional dog show. O’Hurley is an actor, perhaps best known for his role on the television show, Seinfeld, and Frei is the host of the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show every February on the USA Network.
Frei related that his father was a football coach, so Thanksgiving Day was always a big football day in his household. Had he and O’Hurley not paired up for the Thanksgiving hosting duties, he admitted to probably being more involved in football on Thanksgiving.
O’Hurley is often asked if characters in the classic movie about the dog show world, Best in Show, are similar to how dog world people behave in “real life.” O’Hurley shared in a recent interview, “I always answer that real shows are often family events. Real owners learn how to get out of the way of their dogs and let them take the spotlight.”
Frei feels there are three reasons people are attracted to the two-hour Thanksgiving Day dog show. People want to see who will win, they want the entertainment, and they cheer for their favorite breed are Frei’s three reasons folks tune in each year.
The dog show will air immediately following the Macy’s Day Parade on NBC.
