Under the ownership of Dean Publishing and new editor/publisher Casey Dean, San Diego Pets Magazine features pieces that speak to the joys and dilemmas of pet ownership and the less visible elements that weigh into both. Disaster preparedness, losing a beloved pet or bringing home a new one; elements like these play a vital part in the pet-owner relationship, and San Diego Pets Magazine addresses these issues, as well as presenting fun features on unique animals and their owners, according to Dean.
Dean’s hand in SDPM has been present since 2005. The original publisher, Karen Donovan, passed the torch to the San Diego Community Newspaper Group, the company where Dean then worked as the Production Manger and Art Director. October 2010 was to be the final issue of SDPM. SDCNG had decided to drop the print editions and focus their energy on their other publications. Dean took this opportunity to purchase the magazine. “I was absolutely shocked when my plan to carry on San Diego Pets Magazine was accepted,” Dean said, “I had dreamt of publishing the magazine my way before, but never thought the opportunity would arrive. When it did, I realized I had a lot to learn and fast.”
Dean simultaneously started and ended careers. Leaving his job with SDCNG and opening doors to his own company Dean Publishing, inc. Since April 2011, Dean has published San Diego Pets Magazine from his home office with help from Buddy the dog and less help from Noodles the cat.
