Humane Society of the United States Hits One Million Member Mark on Facebook
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) announced reaching one million fans on Facebook. This milestone marks one of many successes the organization, first established in 1954, has reached in the name of animals.
"Although we prefer not to focus on numbers as a measurement of social media success, one million fans is a huge landmark that we are excited to celebrate with our online community," said Carie Lewis, director of Emerging Media for The HSUS. When asked how this goal was reached, Lewis reported, “The HSUS reached this goal by listening to concerns of our fans, producing content that people want to share, and making sure every post provides value to our fans and to the animals they care about."
The HSUS works to reduce suffering and improve the lives of all animals by advocating for better laws; investigating animal cruelty; conducting campaigns to reform industries; providing animal rescue and emergency response; and caring for animals through their sanctuaries, emergency shelters, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and more.
As part of the HSUS’ overall communications strategy, engagement and integration of social media is one of their core components. Advocating and caring for pets, the HSUS is a major advocate for local humane societies and confronts both national and global cruelties through major campaigns.
In addition to their focus on pet welfare, the HSUS also embraces wildlife and habitat protection. From a publication perspective, their member magazine, All Animals, and their bi-monthly shelter professional magazine, Animal Sheltering, are part of the overall focus on animal welfare in which the HSUS is involved.
