Featured Writer of the Week: Dr. Patrick Mahaney
Dr. Patrick Mahaney enjoys a diverse veterinary career by combining clinical practice and media work in Los Angeles. The road to his current happy place is filled with personal and professional challenges, including moving across the country, managing chronic pain from arthritis and intervertebral disease (IVDD), working sleep depriving emergency shifts, and forcing his brain to produce create content despite the many distractions of daily life.
Patrick graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1999 and completed a small animal internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals in 2000.
To better understand the relationship between the body’s energy patterns in the management of his own health, Patrick regularly practices yoga and receives acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. Having experienced the benefits of a clear mind-body connection, Patrick recognized he could similarly improve the health of his animal patients and became a certified veterinary acupuncturist (CVA) through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) in 2006.
He started California Pet Acupuncture and Wellness (CPAW), Inc in 2008 to offer house call and in-facility (Veterinary Cancer Group) integrative veterinary medicine to dogs and cats in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Patrick writes a veterinary column (Patrick's Blog) and connects to animal aficionados worldwide through Q & A, videos, radio interviews, and guest blogs for Perez Hilton's TeddyHilton.com, Fido Friendly, i Love Dogs, Veterinary Practice News, Healthy Pets and People with Dr Patrick on OutImpactRadio.com, MSNBC Sunday with Alex Witt, Pet Docs On Call, and Jackson Galaxy’s My Cat From Hell on Animal Planet.
The media’s obsession with “celebreality” motivated Patrick to create Celebrity Pet News, where he puts a veterinary spin on issues pertaining to celebrities, their pets, and public health. “The Real Housedogs of Beverly Hills” is currently a hot topic on CPN, as the doggy drama nearly exceeds the crazy lives of the housewives.
Patrick is writing his first book, The Uncomfortable Vet, which will be available in 2012 through Havenhurst Books.
