Featured Writer of the Week: Peter Abrahams aka Spencer Quinn
As “Spencer Quinn,” Peter Abrahams writes the Chet and Bernie mystery series, about Bernie, a down-on-his-luck private investigator, and Chet, his lovable canine-turned-narrator. The first book in the series, Dog On It, reached #7 on the New York Times bestseller list. The second Chet and Bernie book, Thereby Hangs a Tail, came out in January 2010, and was also a New York Times bestseller, as was the third, To Fetch a Thief (September 2010). In a starred review, Publishers Weekly said the Chet & Bernie series “radiates pure comedic genius via Chet’s doggy bright narrative. You don’t have to be a dog lover to enjoy this deliciously addictive series.” Book four in the series, The Dog Who Knew Too Much, has just been published in September 2011.
Peter Abrahams – “criminally gifted” according to the New York Times Book Review - is the author of 25 novels. These include the New York Times bestselling Echo Falls mystery series for middle-graders (Down the Rabbit Hole, Behind the Curtain, Into the Dark) and Reality Check (2009) and Bullet Point (2010) for teens. Among his adult books are Oblivion (Shamus prize finalist), The Fan (made into a movie with Robert DeNiro) and Lights Out (Edgar award finalist). Down the Rabbit Hole was a finalist for the Edgar best young adult mystery award and won the Agatha in the same category. Behind the Curtain and Into the Dark were Agatha finalists. In her Cleveland Plain Dealer review of Nerve Damage (2007), Michelle Ross wrote: "I swear, if one more literary person says in that oh-so-condescending tone, 'Oh, I don't read ... mysteries,' I'm going to take a novel by Peter Abrahams and smack him on his smug little head." Reality Check won the best young adult mystery Edgar award in 2010.
Late breaking: Quacky Baseball (Harper, illustrated by Frank Morrison), Peter’s first picture book, came out Feb. 2011. Robbie Forester and the Outlaws of Sherwood Street, first in a new middle-grade series, comes out January 2012 (Philomel).
