Yesterday's News Cat Litter Asks Americans to Rethink Recycling
A majority of Americans say they recycle, but that same majority does not recycle on a daily basis. Yesterday’s News, a cat litter brand made up of recycled paper products, recently conducted a survey and discovered interesting reports and flaws to the number that a majority of Americans are recyclers.
The study by Yesterday’s News revealed that 87 percent said they recycle, however only 51 percent said they recycle everyday. The blame, though, should not fall on the American for at least trying to recycle when they can as some are unaware of what they can actually recycle. The survey revealed that half of the adults would throw an item away if they were unsure if it is recyclable, and 18 percent would put it in the recycling bin whether or not they knew for sure. Following the survey, Yesterday’s News encourages more recycling throughout America by launching their Rethink “Litter!” Recycling Campaign.
In hoping to further educate Americans about the benefits of recycling, they invite everyone to their Yesterday’s News Facebook page and pledge to recycle two paper products a week for 12 weeks. For every pledge they receive on Facebook, the cat litter brand will donate one dollar (up to $5,000) to Keep America Beautiful, an organization focused on litter prevention, waste reduction and recycling. Along with the dollar donation for every pledge, Yesterday’s News will donate $10,000 to the non-profit.
In following up with their hopes of educating America about recycling, as well as attracting pledges, Yesterday’s News Facebook page also offers educational information on recycling, including products and materials that can be recycles, as well as tips for recycling more often.
As a larger brand initiative to educate Americans and consumers about the importance of recycling, the Rething “Litter!” Recycling Campaign will run through October 4. Throughout 2011 and the campaign, Yesterday’s News makes their own pledge to offer tips, facts and online contests to further their support and commitment to the environment. They will also travel to Springfield, MO., home to Yesterday’s News plant and challenge the residents to step up their efforts by recycling the same amount of paper products in one day, that they generally recycle in one week.
"Despite all of the available information available on recycling, nearly half of all adults surveyed (47%) say they haven't learned anything about recycling in more than six months, and 12 percent report that they have never learned anything about recycling," said Adam Hobler, Yesterday's News® assistant brand manager. "We believe that taking small steps to help preserve the environment makes a big difference, and we invite Americans to join us in our commitment by taking a pledge to recycle more paper products this summer."
