A growing sector of the pet industry is franchising of pet services, according to an article published by Forbes.com. The article reports that there are 35 major chains in the niche—spanning the gamut from dog groomers to dog walkers and pet boarding services and doggie day cares.
Writer Carol Tice reports that pet hotels are on the increase, including locations like Dogtopia with over 25 locations and the D Pet Hotels, with three hotels in Hollywood, Scottsdale, and Manhattan.
It is reported that a dog walking or pet sitting franchise can be launched for under $20,000. One of the nation’s largest pet franchise business is Camp Bow Wow. According to their website, “Using our proven dog day care business plan, our goal is to see that you are successful in opening and operating your Camp Bow Wow franchise.”
Heidi Ganahl launched Camp Bow Wow as an alternative to boarding dogs in a kennel. She began franchising in 2003 and yearly revenues are estimated at over $35 million. It was named one of Inc. 500’s Fastest-Growing Privately Owned Companies of 2009, debuting at #447.
Since 1988, pet ownership has expanded from 56 percent of households to 62 percent so more Americans are depending on pet industry franchise services.
Some other pet-based businesses that are picking up momentum in the franchise sector include health insurance for pets and animal identification tags. Pet healthcare is soaring with products for weight management, organic types, and all-natural offerings showing a strong presence.
