The Director of Director of Drs. Foster & Smith's LiveAquaria.com, Kevin Kohen, was recently named "2012 Aquarist of the Year" by the Marine Aquarium Societies of North America (MASNA) at this year's national MACNA conference in late September. Kohen was honored for his sustained and outstanding contributions to the marine aquarium hobby.
Kohen began keeping aquariums at age 6 and was inspired by books her read growing up, emulating aquariums, and finding inspiration in those. Kohan is a marine life photographer, author, and educator. He also was one of the early pioneers in American to maintain live corals in captivity in the early 1980's. His professional career was launched in a retail fish store, where he advanced to direct operations for over eight more years at one of the Midwest's largest tropical fish wholesale and import/export businesses.
In 2002, Kohen joined Drs. Foster & Smith as Director of their live aquatics division, LiveAquaria.com. He proposed an aquaculture coral facility at Drs. Foster & Smith's headquarters in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, in 2004. In July of 2005, the Aquaculture Coral & Marine Life Facility opened. He designed phase II of the facility in 2007, doubling the size to over 20,000 gallons. Phase III is slated for early 2013.
Kohen recently broke ground in the pairing up marine aquarium fishes that no one has ever tried before, then offering them to consumers and private and public breeders. He speaks at many reef club events and advocates for proper care and husbandry.
