Blue Buffalo Breaks Ground On New $85 Million Plant
Wednesday, Oct 17, 2012 10:05 am
Blue Buffalo broke ground recently in Joplin, Missouri, for an $85 million dollar pet food manufacturing plant and distribution center that would employ up to 150 people.
According to The Joplin Globe, the company selected Joplin for a few reasons, including how the city responded to a May, 2011 tornado. The Blue Buffalo Company approached NEI Industrial Services of Joplin in late February about the plant’s construction.
NEI is designing the 425,000 square foot plant and helped find the site for construction. Governor Jay Nixon shared, “Everybody involved in this pulled in one direction to make this happen, including the governor’s office. Just as we saw this summer with Coca-Cola and Schaeffler Group USA, Joplin continues to see exciting economic developments, with another national brand like Blue Buffalo Company investing in this community.”
Blue Buffalo will pay an average equal wage equal to or greater than the current average county wage, which is reported by the Joplin Globe to be about $17 to $18 per hour. The company may be eligible for a strategic economic incentive package from the state of Missouri if strict job creation and investment criteria are met.
It is expected to be one of the safest and most efficient pet food plants in the country, according to officials. At the present time, Blue Buffalo has 12 manufacturing partners. Of the 12, two produce wet food, six produce dry food, and four produce treats. The products are available at pet specialty stores nationwide.
In addition to retailers, the products are available online at a variety of sites, including Petco.com, PetSmart.com, and Waggintails.com.
According to the company, the dog and cat foods also contain LifeSource Bits, a blend of nutrients and antioxidants that are cold formed for potency.
