American Humane Association Dog Awards Held in California
The 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards were held in Beverly Hills on October 6, 2012.
The Hero Dog Awards draws both celebrations of the human and canine variety, with awards in eight different categories. The categories include service dogs, military dogs, hearing dogs, law enforcement/arson dogs, search and rescue dogs, guide dogs, therapy dogs, and "emerging hero dogs" (pets and ordinary dogs that do extraordinary things).
Presented by Lois Pope LIFE Foundation and broadcast on the Hallmark Channel, the hero dog awards are produced by MRB Productions, which have won an Emmy. Nominations for the awards ended on March 26, 2012, and the general public voting period launched on April 1.
Winners in each category were selected by the public from a total of over 350 contestants. Each winner was flown to Hollywood with two of their human friends to attend the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards show. There walked the red carpet, attend the show, and will be recognized in a video tribute.
A retired military working dog named Gabe, and his owner Sgt. 1st Class Charles Shuck, won the top award. The Hallmark Channel will show the awards on November 8, 2012.
The American Humane Association awarded Gabe and Shuck a prize of $10,000 for being named 2012 American Hero Dog. The duo plans to donate their money to the United States War Dogs Association, according to WACH-TV.
