Pet Club of Mesa, Ariz. has been selected as Retailer of the Year by Pet Business Magazine.
Touted as Arizona and Colorado’s pet superstore, Pet Club opened in 1982 and carries a variety of premium pet products at discounted prices. According to Pet Business, Pet Club has been growing dramatically in terms of both sales and store locations as the chain operates 31 stores in Arizona and Colorado. Pet Club also owns several feed stores operating under different banners.
Weston Smith, the director of operations and one of the three partners at the privately owned company, reported, “We pride ourselves on carrying the largest selection of holistic and natural pet foods around. On top of that, we make sure that we feature the best selection of toys and treats in the industry. We have all the things that pet lovers want, and that translates into a loyal customer base and a growing business.”
Receiving the 2012 Pet Business Retailer of the Year will culminate with Smith and founder/CEO, Tim Noland, being honored at a dinner in Las Vegas this month.
The emphasis at Pet Club is on dogs and cats but some products are available in most stores for bird, small animals and other pets. The Pet Club stores vary in size from between 5,000 to 10,000 square feet and carry as many as 14,000 SKUs.
Smith joined Pet Club after working for Noland as a vendor at the Iams Company. Their third partner, Tim Stevenson, joined Pet Club in 1990.
“We found that consumers started to change how they fed their pets. They wanted something better, and we saw an opening in the retail industry,” Smith shared.
