ASPCA Launches Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project
The ASPCA has established The Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project, which is a $1 million initiative funding treatments and services for dogs and puppies in shelters at municipal animal sheltering organizations. The goal is to prepare the animals for transport from overcrowded shelters so they have a better chance at being adopted.
International philanthropist, Mrs. Carroll Petrie, is the donor of the monies. The goal of the project is to save 16,000 dogs before the end of May of 2013. This will occur through a per dog or puppy subsidy for each animal transferred out through a variety of programs. These programs include transfer to rescue groups, transfer to other shelters, adoptions through foster "Adoption Ambassador" programs, or adoptions through permanent off-site partner locations.
ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres, shared, “We are hoping the project will be a shining example of the impact generous donors can have on animals, and that it will inspire other organizations to look beyond the walls of their facilities for new collaborations and partnerships."
The per dog or puppy subsidy can be used for things such as crates and gas purchase for transport vehicles. The organizations that participate can use the funds completely or give part or all of it to rescue groups or destination shelters that take the dogs. The subsidy will only apply to lives saved above and beyond each participating groups' previous year's numbers. The participating organizations thus far include Animal Shelter of Pell City, Inc. in Pell City, Alabama; Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society, Inc. in Oxford, Mississippi; Valencia County Animal Control in Los Lunas, New Mexico; Beaufort County Animal Shelter & Control in Beaufort, South Carolina; Greenville County Animal Care Services in Greenville, South Carolina; Animal Care Trust dba/McKamey Animal Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Central Missouri Humane Society in Columbia, Missouri.
