According to a report filed by global research firm, Euromonitor International, the pet care industry in India is growing and estimated to continue its ascent through at least the year 2015.
The report shares that as consumers gain a better understanding of their pets’ needs, they will trade up to specialized and premium products. Pet ownership in India is growing in general, and a demand for pet care products has arisen. In addition to pet food, markets in pet health, grooming, and leisure are seeing profit in India.
One such business in India seeing the rewards of the boom include Petspace, which Hema Deepak, former engineer, began in 2010. Petspace organizes weekend activities for pets, overnight boarding, and hosts pet birthday parties. The owner cites a 20 percent rise in the number of pet parties. “With daycare facilities, they do not hesitate to adopt a pet,” she reports.
Pet grooming is also on the rise in India. One pet groomer at Koramangala 5th Block shared, “Every second person in my block has a pet or two, and most of them have no time to groom their pooches at home.” Some of the services offered at the groomer include nail polishing, coloring, aroma therapy rinses, oil massages, paw treatments, hair enhancement for older dogs, hair styling, trimming, summer cuts, hair setting and full grooming spa packages.
Food is not being overlooked in the pet market either. Pet Dhaba is a business that is designed to feed pets properly. They offer delicacies cooked with paneer and cheese for a vegetarian pet and variety of meat and chicken meals for non-vegetarians.
Clothing and accessories for pets in India are also in demand. One business owner in the trade reports that grooming products, toys, and accessories are in demand along with stylish clothing like bandanas, collars, and designer sweats.
