Writer of the week is Doug Koktavy, best-selling author of The Legacy of Beezer and Boomer: Lessons on Living and Dying From My Canine Brothers. A driven attorney steeped in the realistic, Doug found his perspective and beliefs changing when his dogs became terminally ill.
From the beginning of the book, readers know that the dogs have passed and the memoir is the story of their final journey through kidney disease and bone cancer. This remarkably forthright book details the pain, sadness, joy and growth a caregiver experiences when shepherding a beloved family member from earth to life beyond. The short life of a pet becomes a virtue, not a flaw, as the dogs teach the human about end of life. Koktavy shares, “If you think a book about two dying dogs is too sad to read, think again. This story is actually one that encompasses the circle of life with all its heartfelt emotions, the purest of which is love. “
The book won 14 book awards in 2010 and is now published in Italy and Holland. A passionate speaker and fundraiser , Doug speaks to veterinary groups, pet organizations or anywhere people need to find peace in change. He is a Certified Counselor, Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement and moderates several Yahoo forums. He is on the Board of Directors of Bone Cancer Dogs, Inc. and volunteers with Safe Harbor Labrador Retriever Rescue.
He enjoys biking, running and taking quiet walks with his new black Labs, Dory and Emma. He is also a contributing author for a 2012 book, Your Dog’s Golden Years: A Manual for Senior Dog Healthcare. Doug’s next publication will be a step-by-step Guidebook, titled The Presence Plan, which will teach the reader how to create their own place of peace when life changes around them.
