Caren Osrin Gittleman has two blogs to her credit: Cat Chat with Caren & Cody where she blogs with her cat Cody about cats and Dakota’s Den where she blogs with her sheltie Dakota about dogs.
Caren formerly worked at The Plain Dealer newspaper in Cleveland, Ohio, which happens to be Ohio’s largest newspaper. She was there for 21-1/2 years in the Advertising department, so she learned the ropes of the newspaper world there. Originally hailing from Cleveland and now a resident of Michigan, Caren is a graduate of Kent State with a major in Rhetoric & Communication and a minor in Philosophy.
Caren resigned from the Plain Dealer in June of 2001 and moved to Michigan after meeting her husband online. After working at The Detroit Jewish News, Caren lost her job in 2007 due to corporate downsizing. She answered an ad in a local paper for citizen journalists and blogging. Armed with a passion and a plan, Caren was selected to write Cat Chat. Though the link is sponsored by the newspaper, Caren owns the link and all of its content. She launched Dakota’s blog in the spring of 2011.
Caren’s advice to other pet bloggers and those who want to get started in this explosive industry of pet blogging is to write as yourself. “Blog because you love your topic and let your authenticity shine. Learn to give and take with other bloggers,” she says.
One of the highlights in pet blogging for Caren was finding the BlogPaws website, community, and conference. She reports receiving the answers to many questions she had, topic selection guidance, and getting to know the members in person and online as richly rewarding to her blogging success.
