Walmart has revealed the launch of a store brand ultra-premium dry dog food line that will be sold exclusively in over 2,900 Walmart stores nationwide.
Pure Balance dog food is touted as containing no soy, wheat, or corn additives and no artificial colors, preservatives, and no chicken by-products. Included in the dog food is a blend of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids designed for a healthy coat and skin. According to Walmart, the first ingredient in the food is either lamb meat or poultry.
Jody Pinson, vice president of pets at Walmart, shared, “Our customers told us they wanted to be able to feed their dogs a dry food made with pure ingredients without having to make a special trip to the pet store. We listened and are excited to offer Pure Balance, an ultra premium dog food, at a price our customers can afford."
Walmart sells enough dog food every year to completely fill 2,050 Olympic-sized swimming foods and will sell enough dog food to outweigh the Great Pyramid of Egypt in less than three years. According to GfK US Pet Shops and Nielsen Scantrack & Homescan 2011, ultra premium is the fastest growing segment of the dry dog food market, growing 8.5 percent in 3011 to nearly $3.5 billion.
Bags of the new Pure Balance dog food will be available in chicken and brown rice, priced at $6.78 for five pounds, $16.60 for 15 pounds, and $31.88 for 30 pounds. The lamb and brown rice formula will be $8.47 for five pounds, $21.47 for 15 pounds, and $39.88 for 30 pounds.
