Blogger of the Week: Bernadette E. Kazmarski
Bernadette Kazmarkski works as both a commercial artist, with 30 years in graphic design, photography and illustration and writing for promotional and corporate materials, and for over 20 years as a fine artist creating commissioned portraits of others’ animal companions and works in other media. For the past 12 she has been self-employed working at home, supervised by her family of felines.
To have a venue for her writing and art Bernadette founded The Creative Cat in January 2009, sharing her experience caring for her felines, namely HCM-afflicted Namir, whose image graces the header from her painting “Warm Winter Sun”, as well as sharing current portraits in progress and other artwork, images, and professional and creative writing.
The site grew to include articles, essays, stories, poetry and lots of images. After 30 years of feline rescue Bernadette features adoptable cats rescued from the streets by individuals and small rescue organizations, and tells her own illustrated rescue stories. Articles on feline health and care inform and encourage others to consider a hands-on approach with their pet’s care, and an extensive section on pet loss helps comfort others with the shared experience of grief.
A master gardener keeping backyard wildlife habitat, monthly articles feature developing a habitat and maintaining balance in your yard naturally, and articles about living green with pets discuss cleaning, beautifying and creating with non-toxic substances inside.
She also features the work of other artists and crafters inspired by cats in studio visits and talks extensively about being an artist in occasional articles about her life as an artist, in her portrait articles, and in her daily sketches of her cats.
Bernadette is a member of the Cat Writers’ Association and local art and writing organizations.
