Reptile and Amphibian Law Symposium and Workshop Announced
The first annual reptile and amphibian law symposium and workshop has been slated and announced for September 28 through September 30 in Houston, Texas. The event will host panels, workshops, breakout sessions, and talks on the laws, rules and regulations about reptiles and amphibians at the local, state, national, and international levels.
The two-day event is being presented by the National Reptile and Amphibian Advisory Council in partnership with the Association of Amphibian and Reptile Veterinarians (ARAV), the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) and the East Texas Herpetological Society (ETHS).
The event is free and open to anyone but registration is requested so that event organizers can match logistics to projected number of attendees. Interested panelists can fill in the appropriate check boxes on the registration form online, at which time a NRAAC volunteer will contacted interested panelists.
According to Pet Business magazine, some of the confirmed panelists include Canning; Dr. Elliott Jacobson from ARAV; Dr. David Doherty, vice president of ETHS; Doug Hotle, curator of herpetology at Albuquerque Biological Park; Jeff Barringer, founder and publisher of kingsnake.com; Alan Kardon, curator of herpetology at the San Antonio Zoo; Andrew Gluesenkamp, Ph.D, herpetologist at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; and Steve Hammack of the Fort Worth Zoo.
Throughout the symposium and workshop, the East Texas Herpetological Symposium and Expo event is being held concurrently, which includes a Saturday symposium, banquet, and auction, and a Sunday reptile expo.
“While retailers might not be that concerned about the international aspect of regulation, they need to understand the rules and regulations involving reptiles in their state,” Mike Canning, president and CEO of PIJAC said.
