PetSafe, a company based in Knoxville, Tennessee, and manufacturer of fencing and containment systems along with bark control products, dog doors, and food and water systems, announced that Texarkana, Arkansas, was named the “top dog” in the PetSafe Bark for Your Park contest.
Over 1,000 cities were nominated from across the United States for the opportunity to win a $100,000 PetSafe dog park. A total of nearly 660,000 votes were cast in the contest and the 15 final cities vied for top prize. Construction is set to begin on the PetSafe Jef-FUR-son Dog Park as a part of the city of Texarkana’s Jefferson Park. The city received the most votes in the contest with nearly 167,400 total.
Wayne Smith, mayor of the Texarkana, Arkansas, reported, “What began with a handful of passionate citizens has grown into a community project of love for our animals, and it has united both sides of our town. And by working together, we have succeeded in winning the 2012 PetSafe 'Bark for Your Park' contest!”
The contest’s runner up was Oak Forest, Illinois, who won $25,000 toward building a local off-leash dog park. The town of Derby, Vermont, won the “Bark from Your Heart” award and earned the highest ratio of votes to population and also won $25,000.
Randy Boyd, president and CEO of Radio Systems Corporation, the maker of the PetSafe brand, shared that several cities in the contest reported awareness for the contest but also a unification of neighbors across the community occurred. “Dog parks are just as much about the owners – people of all ages, genders and races, sitting on the same bench and finding common ground in their love of their pets,” he stated.
