Fifty Animal Shelters Begin ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge
On August 1, 2012, the kick off began for the 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge wherein 50 animal shelters compete in a three-month long competition to increase adoptions and win a part of the over $500,000 in ASPCA prize grants, including a $100,000 grand prize.
Bert Troughton, vice president of community outreach for the ASPCA, shared, “We've been watching as the contestants gear up for events and get the most wonderful animals ready for adoption. We can't wait to see the photos of all those happy families who will find their new best friends over the next three months. In this competition, everybody wins – especially the animals!"
Rachael Ray has been a lifelong animal lover and advocate, supporting animal welfare groups. Thanks to her passion for animals and love of her pit bull, Isaboo, Rachael created a line of pet food in 2008, Nutrish, to help raise money for animals in need. She partnered with Ainworth Pet Nutrition to develop the line, which features real meat as its first ingredient.
The three-month long contest kicks off with special events being held across the country this upcoming weekend, including adoption events, promotions, and discount on adoption fees. On Facebook and Twitter, the word is also being spread with hashtag #100KChallenge.
Contestants will work to help save at least 300 more cats and dogs for the months of August, September, and October 2012 than they did for the same period of time in 2011. The shelter that achieves this milestone in the three-month period with the greatest increase in lives saved will be awarded $100,000. Second place prize of $25,000 will be awarded for second greatest increase in lives saved, and the contestant that best engages members to save more animals will also get $25,000. Divisional grants will also be awarded between $5,000 and $40,000.
