Filmmaker and actress Jessi Badami announced the production of a feature-length documentary, Mall Dogs, due to be completed in the spring of 2013.
The subject of her film is Lucky Paws Adoption Center, which is run by the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Unique about the center its positioning and marketing, next to stores including The Gap, Victoria’s Secret, and Macy’s. With its vibrant colors and inviting signage, though it appears to be retail based, the “store” is really an animal shelter.
Badami revealed, “When I first saw Lucky Paws I thought it was a pet store and my heart sank. We need more people adopting pets instead of buying them. But then when I got closer I saw the words “City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department” etched on the window and I realized that this was a city shelter.”
The filmmaker’s inspiration for the film came after she visited the “shelter.” Fundraising efforts are being generated through Kickstarter.com, so that Badami can produce the feature-length documentary. She hopes to raise $57,000 no later than August 19, 2012, and also seeks corporate sponsorships.
The goal of the film is to raise awareness and spread the word about animal adoptions nationwide. By generating more awareness and public education, it is the film’s intent to increase the adoption rate nationwide.
“If we can get the best-practices of Lucky Paws out to other shelters around the country, it could mean that thousands more pets get adopted instead of killed every year,” Badami reported.
