The non-profit grant making organization arm of Planet Dog, the Planet Dog Foundation, recently announced the recipients of $25,000 in new grants to a total of eight canine service organizations.
The grants are designed to help fund assistance and therapy dog along with canine search and rescue programs across the nation. They also help to support an array of non-profit programs that help children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities, natural disaster survivors, and more.
This year’s selected grant recipients are: Austin Dog Alliance, of Austin, Texas; Central Lakes Search and Rescue, of Garfield, Minnesota; Champlain Valley Search and Rescue K-9 Unit, of Keeseville, New York; Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, of Norfolk, Virginia; Freedom Service Dogs of Englewood, Colorado; New Jersey Search and Rescue, of Mahwah, New Jersey; Service Dogs of Virginia, of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Susquehanna Service Dogs, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The Planet Dog Foundation donates two percent of all purchases of Planet Dog products to the PDF. Stacey Lange, of Service Dogs of Virginia, a recipient, shared, “This grant will be used to support the innovative training of diabetic alert dogs. A diabetic alert dog can detect when blood sugar begins to drop in a person with Type 1 diabetes, helping to prevent serious health consequences, even death. Service Dogs of Virginia is one of the few organizations in the country training diabetic alert dogs and we couldn't do it without the support of caring individuals and foundations like Planet Dog.”
Kristen Smith, the foundation’s executive director, reported there is a great need to support children and adults across the country. They received proposals for the grants from over 100 organizations and were able to donate $25,000 to eight of them. Since 2006, PSF has donated over $875,000 of in-kind and dollar donations to canine service programs.
