DOGTV, touted as the first and only television network designed for dogs, made its debut in the San Diego, California marketplace in February on Cox and Time Warner Cable in San Diego. Their four-month audience results from the test market have been released. Results indicate that more than two-thirds of the households viewing were repeat viewers, with average viewing time lasting more than two hours.
The idea of Dr. Nicholas Dodman, super trainer Victoria Stillwell, and animal rights expert, Warren Eckstein, DogTV has been developed and tested over four years’ time and is touted as a “new channel for man’s best friend.”
Gilad Neumann, CEO of DOGTV, reported, “We are elated with these numbers which surpassed our greatest expectations. "Before the launch we would have considered a five percent viewership rate as a smashing success. The results have reinforced our position that there is a real demand for this type of programming. Our plans are to meet that demand with expanded nationwide coverage by fall 2012 and with our recently launched online streaming channel.”
DOGTV will remain free to its market test phase audience in San Diego for a limited period of time. For those not in the test market, DOGTV is available via online streaming for $9.99 a month. Three types of programming are offered for both relaxing and stimulating content along with positive behavioral reinforcements.
The cable channel reports that Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, believes it is important to provide auditory and visual stimulation for dogs left home alone.
