Petco has announced they will become the nation’s first retailer in the country to offer the fresh, natural pet food, Freshpet.
Freshpet is a food for animals that is meat based, refrigerated to retain freshness, has no preservatives, and is free of corn, wheat, by-products and fillers.
Freshpet CEO Richard Thompson, reported, “Fresh is the fastest growing segment in the pet food category, and for good reason, people are starting to understand that pets benefit from eating fresh foods just like we do. We’re thrilled to be leading the fresh trend together with Petco.”
Freshpet is headquartered in Secaucus, New Jersey and was founded in 2006. The products are designed as a healthy alternative to dry and canned food and use high quality meats, poultry, and fish with fruits and fresh vegetables as main ingredients. The company also touts the product as an alternative to raw and homemade dog food diets.
Both Petco and Unleashed by Petco stores will be carrying the Freshpet line, including Deli Fresh, Vital, and Dog Nation, available at select pet specialty stores.
Freshpet reports that 97 percent of their ingredients come from the United States and Canada, and none of their ingredients come from China. All of the poultry, beef, and fish is sourced from USDA registered suppliers who follow USFA regulations for safe handling, according to the company. Lamb from Freshpet is sourced from New Zealand and is natural, free-range, and BSE free.
Petco operates over 1,100 stores across the country with 30 Unleashed by Petco locations, which are smaller format neighborhood shops.
