According to a story reported by the Wall Street Journal recently, unrestrained traveling dogs will be required to buckle up if one Rhode Island legislator gets his way.
Along with texting, eating, and grooming (oneself) while driving, Rhode Island may become the first state in the nation to fine owners who allow pets to ride on their laps while driving. Rhode Island legislator Peter Palumbo told the Wall Street Journal, “If you really love your dog, try not to kill them.”
An August 2010 survey by AAA revealed that one in five dog owners admitted allowing their pets ride in their laps while driving. A total of 31 percent revealed their dog was a distraction regardless of where he was located in the car. According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), an estimated $53 billion is expected to be spent in the pet industry this year. A large part of that sum constitutes travel to and from vacations with pets, along with daily trips with unrestrained pets.
Companies are embracing and addressing the pet travel aspect, including web entrepreneur Benjamin Short, who recently launched Premier Pet Carriers. The site features discounts on items for travel such as pet carriers, pet seat covers, leashes, and crates.
The website is a division of Elsben Enterprises, LLC, and sells obedience and training products from companies such as PetSafe and DogSmart along with a tracking device from SportDog so that an off leash dog’s whereabouts are always known.
Short reported, “The products we carry are useful for traveling with pets. If you have to travel long distance with pets, then you need to make sure they are safe and comfortable. My carriers and training devices fulfill those needs.”
