A recent survey by CouponCabin.com, in conjunction with Harris Interactive, revealed that three out of four pet owners said the state of the economy does not affect how much they spend on their pets.
The survey was conducted online in the United States and took place from April 19 through April 23, 2012, targeting 2,211 U.S. adults ages 18 and over (1,299 of them being pet owners). A total of 26 percent of respondents said they would put the health care needs of their pet ahead of their own. Almost 17 percent revealed they do not have pet health insurance but would consider buying it, with almost 7 percent stating they presently have pet health insurance.
Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com, stated, “Many people keep their pet spending within reason, but sometimes it can get out of control. It's important to keep an eye on how much you're spending on your animal companions and not get carried away with extravagant or unnecessary pet purchases.”
Of those surveyed, nearly 8 out of 10 U.S. adults shared they strongly or somewhat agree that some people overspend on their pets, with expensive and unnecessary grooming treatments topping the list. Others in the “unnecessary and overspending on pets” category included 77 percent of respondents revealing getting a pet a massage, 71 percent with extravagant pet hotels and boarding, 48 percent with regularly purchasing gourmet pet food, 44 percent for medicating a pet for psychological needs, and 33 percent revealing buying too many pet toys.
