Dayna Hilton, known as Firefighter Dayna to millions of children and their caregivers, and her fire safety dogs, have made it their mission to save lives, reduce injuries and decrease property loss from fire for almost a decade. As a second generation firefighter, Hilton joined the fire service in August 2000 and is recognized as one of the leading fire safety educators in the country.
Hilton became interested in blogging in 2006 after she and her dog, Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog, appeared on PBS KIDS Sprout sharing fire safety tips. Hilton found blogging not only a great way to share the adventures of Sparkles, but to share fire safety tips with children and their caregivers.
Hilton’s blog documented Sparkles’ life and the impact that Sparkles had in helping save the lives of children. The blog has also helped promote Hilton’s two award- winning children's fire safety books, Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog and Sparkles Goes to Boston. Hilton’s first book, Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog, was honored to have been mentioned on the Floor of Congress and a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Preparedness Sub-Committee.
In 2009, Hilton founded the Keep Kids Fire Safe® Foundation in honor of Sparkles. Sparkles crossed over the Rainbow Bridge in October 2010, and Hilton has been surprised at the impact that Sparkles still has, with Sparkles’ Facebook page reaching almost 5,000 friends.
Hilton, named one of the “101 Women Bloggers to watch in 2010” by We Magazine, hosts Sparkles’ Safety Spot, a weekly live streamed safety show and numerous other fire safety-related blogs and websites. Her current fire safety dogs, Tango the Fire Safety Dog, Siren the Fire Safety Dog and Sparkles II, Skype on a weekly basis to school children all across the world on their Sparkles’ Fire Safety Skype Tour.
