Maria Goodavage is the New York Times bestselling author of Soldier Dogs: The Untold Story of America's Canine Heroes
. A former reporter for USA Today and the San Francisco Chronicle, Goodavage is the editor and featured writer for one of the most widely read dog blogs in the world, "For the Love of Dog" at Dogster.com. She coproduced and wrote an award-winning children's video about dogs and other animals, starring the voice of Ed Asner. She lives with her family in San Francisco, and the four-legged guy on their team is a Lab named Jake.
Goodavage has had a longstanding passion for the dogs of war, which started when her dad – also an author – used to tell her about the stray pups (and wayward monkey) he took in while overseas in World War II, and about the military dogs who helped save lives – and sometimes soldiers’ sanity.
She works in a small red cottage in the backyard of her San Francisco home and, among her other credits, she is the author of The Dog Lover’s Companion to California (now in its seventh edition). Goodavage recently appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Despite the entertainment provided by such distractions as watching neighbor cats taunting her otherwise amiable dog throughout the day, she manages to get a tremendous amount of writing done.
