Brother International and StartUpNation Award $25,000 in Grant Money
Brother International Corporation recently revealed the five winning entrants of its first small business grant program. The program launched on January 10, 2012, and was held in conjunction with StartupNation, an entrepreneurial online resource. A total of 900 submissions were received.
A combined sum of $25,000 was awarded to the five small business owners, with each receiving a $5,000 grant. The money is to be used to either launch the business or initiate a new project within the small business itself.
One of the winners of the Brother Small Business Grant Program was revealed to be AARF Pet Central, which is a community pet resource center in Stone Mountain, Georgia, targeted at helping people and/or families with pet adoptions. The grant will allow AARF to finish building renovations such as ceiling and light installations.
AARF was founded in 2002 and has saved over 1,000 pets from euthanasia at county shelters. AARF is a no-kill organization and will not euthanize pets unless a pet is in untreatable pain or illness. Some of their programs include foster and adoption, Silver Paws Program (targeted as a seniors for seniors program), Kids N Kritters, Not One More, and Casper’s Fund Spay/Neuter Program. The Kids n Kritters program teaches children about pet ownership and dog bite prevention.
John Wandishin, Vice President of Marketing, Brother International Corporation, shared, “We are thrilled to witness such a high-level of participation and enthusiasm from the small business community. This grant program demonstrates our commitment and support to help entrepreneurs gain access to capital, while also helping Brother better understand the current challenges and concerns for America's small business owners."
An online poll was conducted by Brother International Corporation and StartupNation, and the results showed that 61 percent of small business owners started with under $5,000 in capital to launch their company.
The other four winners of grants were Arcade Brewery of Chicago, Illinois; Curvy Riders, LLC, of Grand Junction, Colorado; Misty Mountain Farms and Education, of Hillsboro, Oregon; and Sugared Beauty, LLC, of Elizabethtown, PA.
