The awards honor the dogs that make a difference in everyday lives through their compassion, intuition, and comfort. Celebrating the human-animal bond, the 2011 awards show was held in Los Angeles in October. They are broadcast nationwide on the Hallmark Channel and are produced by MRB Productions, which is an Emmy award-winning company.
David Beigie, State Farm’s Public Affairs Vice President, shared, “State Farm was very proud when Arson Dog Sadie won in the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards' Law Enforcement & Arson dog category last year, given that Sadie and her handler, Jerry Means, are graduates of the State Farm Arson Dog Program.”
In the last 20 years, State Farm has placed over 250 arson dogs throughout the United States and Canada in order to detect accelerants and the cause of fires, many which are revealed to be arson-related. As a 135-year-old association, American Humane has been protecting pets and animals from cruelty, abuse, and neglect since 1877.
There are a total of eight categories for which dogs can be nominated, including Law Enforcement & Arson Dogs; Service Dogs; Therapy Dogs; Military Dogs; Guide Dogs; Search and Rescue Dogs; Hearing Dogs; and Emerging Hero Dogs (the category for ordinary dogs). Finalists are flown to Hollywood with two human guardians to the awards gala in Los Angeles, which will be held on October 6, 2012.
Nominations for the awards end on March 26, 2012, and the general public voting period launches on April 1.
