Winners of the first-ever Global Pet Expo Retailer Excellence Awards were recently announced at the show’s pet industry breakfast held on March 1, 2012, in Orlando.
The awards are designed to honor those who demonstrate outstanding independent pet stores in a host of categories. The awards had a total of three businesses in each category for a total of seven categories. In the end, one from each category received this inaugural honor.
American Pet Products Association (APPA) President, Bob Vetere, shared during the breakfast awards that over $50 billion was spent in the pet industry in 2011 with 2012 projected to surpass $53 billion. Award nominations were accepted until December 20, 2011 and nominations came from retailers, manufacturers, distributors, and members of the media.
The Global Pet Expo Retailer of the Year Award was presented to Woofmeow Family Pet Center in Derry, New Hampshire. This award recognizes a retailer that excelled in several categories, including sales, service, design, and community.
The Merchandising Excellence Award was presented for creative techniques that helped to promote sales and service and was presented to Brookline Grooming and Pet Supplies in Brookline, Massachusetts. In the Multi-Service Excellence Award, this went to a retailer that implemented a broad array of services including things like boarding, training, and grooming. Winner in this category was The Petropolitan in Dallas, Texas.
In the category of Marketing Excellence Award, one retailer is selected that best exemplified sales and promotional techniques to help increase sales and attract customers. The winner of this award was Petagogy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For the Customer Service Excellence Award, the retailer selected was courteous, knowledgeable, and engage customers in answering questions and addressing their needs. Winner of the Customer Service Excellence Award was Paw’s Natural Pet Emporium in Richland, Washington.
Rounding out the awards were the Excellence in Store Design and the Community Service Award, handed out to Especially for Pets in Newton, Massachusetts and West Lebanon Feed and Supply in West Lebanon, New Hampshire, respectively.
