American Kennel Club Announces 2011 Registration Statistics
The American Kennel Club (AKC) recently announced their latest registration statistics, with the Labrador Retriever holding its rank of first place, which it did in 2010 as well.
AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson said, “While the Labrador Retriever has proven once again to be a family favorite, this year clearly belongs to the Beagle." The Beagle stepped ahead of the Yorkshire Terrier breed to become the third most popular dog breed in the United States, per the AKC registration statistics.
Some of the 2011 trends of note include four Setter breeds making big strides over the previous year; the English Setter moved from 101 to 87, the Irish Setter from 77 to 70, the Irish Red and White Setter from 150 to 147, and the Gordon Setter from 98 to 94. Falling in the listing with the biggest drop was the Coonhound breed, tumbling from 91st to 109th in terms of registrations with the AKC.
Smaller dogs that rose in the registrations include the Brussels Griffon going from 80th to 77th and the Manchester Terrier moving from 121st to 119th. Larger dogs in the top ten list include the Labrador Retriever in 1st place, German Shepherd in second, Golden Retriever in fourth, the Boxer in seventh place, and the Rottweiler in tenth place.
The American Kennel Club recently hosted the 136th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show which is touted as the second longest continuously held sporting event in the United States, falling one year behind the Kentucky Derby. The AKC celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2009, and since 1884 they have remained the largest registry and not-for-profit organization of purebred dogs in the world.
