Theresa Donnelly is an active duty naval public affairs officer with an off duty passion for protecting animals. She began this journey in 2008 by helping run nonprofit Boxer Club of Hawaii, an American Kennel Club Sanctioned Boxer club, educating the Hawaii community on Boxer dog health issues, ethical breeding practices and Hawaii pet events for dogs. Her two male Boxers are currently in Hawaii conformation dog shows.
Theresa writes columns on ethical breeding for Hawaii pet magazines, newspapers and trade journals. She has advocated for better laws protecting breeding animals by testifying at the Hawaii State legislature, writing three Letters to the Editor and attending neighborhood board meetings. She co-moderates the Facebook page for the Hawaii office of the Humane Society of the United States and has collaborated with them and the local Hawaiian Humane Society for a number of articles concerning the sales of animals at pet stores.
In August 2011, she founded Hawaii Military Pets, an online resource for the Hawaii Military Pet community, advocating for military education on pets with an emphasis on lifetime pet ownership. This year, the group is holding a lobby day at the State Capitol and holding a military pet event at the Hawaiian Humane Society, among other initiatives.
She is a guest blogger for the Department of Defense’s Family Matters Blog, offering tips to military pet owners. Her long-term goal is to take Hawaii Military Pets global, after she completes her graduate studies with the Naval War College.
