PetSmart Charities Announces $1 Million Dollar Spay/Neuter Program
PetSmart Charities has revealed they will donate $1 million dollars via a grant program to help save the lives of cats and pit bull terriers, two of the largest sectors of animals at risk of being euthanized in shelters.
The grant is a part of the $26.3 million that PetSmart Charities has provided to subsidize almost one million spay/neuter surgeries in the United States. The 2012 grant program will assist 65 non-profit spay and neuter clinics around the globe to help 23,00 cats and pit bull terriers in the February through August time frame. According to Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities, Inc.., this would reduce the homeless pet population by tens of thousands of at-risk dogs and cats that end up in shelters.
Della Maddalena shared, “Approximately 34 percent of dogs and cats in U.S. households are not spayed or neutered yet the procedure is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet overpopulation. With our new national grant program and our ongoing efforts to make affordable spay/neuter available to the public, PetSmart Charities is addressing the root cause of pet homelessness and this will have a national impact on reducing shelter intake and, ultimately, the euthanasia of adoptable pets.”
Employing approximately 48,000 associates, PetSmart, Inc., has more than 1,197 stores and over 185 in-store PetSmart(R) PetsHotel(R) dog and cat boarding facilities. Trading at PETM, through its in-store pet adoption partnership with PetSmart Charities(R), PetSmart has helped save the lives of more than 4.5 million pets.
